From the waterfalls of the Ourika Valley to the Agafay desert at sunset and the Atlantic ramparts of Essaouira — the ten best day trips and excursions from Marrakech, with honest advice on each.
Marrakech: the perfect base
Marrakech is the perfect base for exploring central Morocco: the High Atlas is an hour away, the Atlantic under three, and the desert closer than most people think. Here are ten of our most popular excursions from the city — all with hotel or riad pickup, a professional driver, and fixed prices per vehicle rather than per person, so the car is yours and the schedule is yours.
1. Ourika Valley
The classic escape: one hour south into the High Atlas, where Berber villages line a rushing river and the seven-waterfalls walk starts at Setti Fatma. Lunch on a riverside terrace with your feet over the water, and come on a Monday to catch the genuine weekly souk at Tnine Ourika. From €30 per vehicle — the best value big day out from Marrakech.
2. Ouzoud Waterfalls
Morocco's most spectacular falls — 110 metres of cascades tumbling into a green gorge about 2h30 northeast of Marrakech. Walk down through olive groves, take the little boat under the spray, and watch for the wild Barbary macaques that live around the rim. Go on a weekday if you can; weekends draw big local crowds.
3. Essaouira
The windswept, blue-and-white Atlantic port: UNESCO-listed medina, wave-battered ramparts, a working fishing harbour and famously fresh grilled seafood. It's 190 km west — about 2h45 each way through argan country, with goats in the trees if you're lucky. From €95 per vehicle as a private day trip or one-way transfer.
4. Agafay desert evening
You don't need to drive two days to see desert. The Agafay — a moonscape of bare stone hills 40 minutes from the city — does a very convincing impression of one, especially at sunset. Camel or quad ride, dinner in a desert camp under the stars, and back in your riad by bedtime. It's not the great ergs of Merzouga or Zagora (those need two to three days, and they're worth them), but as an evening it's magic for the effort involved.
5. Aït Ben Haddou & Ouarzazate
Over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) to the most famous kasbah in Morocco — the UNESCO-listed mud-brick citadel of Aït Ben Haddou, backdrop to Gladiator and Game of Thrones — and on to Ouarzazate, Morocco's Hollywood, with its film studios and Taourirt kasbah. It's a long, spectacular day: around 4 hours each way. From €120 per vehicle, and it also works beautifully as a one-way transfer if you're continuing toward the dunes.
6–10. More to discover
Five more that our travellers rate year after year:
- Hot-air balloon at dawn — drift over palm groves and Berber villages with the snow-capped Atlas on the horizon, then a traditional breakfast on landing
- Camel ride in the Palmeraie — the easy, family-friendly taste of camel travel among 100,000 palm trees on the edge of the city
- Quad biking — half-day adrenaline in the Palmeraie or the Agafay's lunar hills; no experience needed
- Moroccan cooking class — shop the souk with a local cook, then learn tajine, couscous and mint tea done properly, and eat your homework
- Casablanca day trip — the Hassan II Mosque, one of the few in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors, plus the Corniche and Art Deco centre; from €140 per vehicle (~2h45 each way)
Private or small group?
Every excursion above runs as a fully private trip: your own vehicle, your own driver, your own schedule, at a fixed price per vehicle. That usually beats per-person tours on price for two or more people — and always beats them on flexibility, because you decide when to leave, where to stop and how long to linger.
Booking is the same for all of them: message us on WhatsApp with your dates and group size, get a fixed quote in minutes, and pay in cash (euros or dirhams) or by bank transfer. Child seats are free on request.
Frequently asked questions
Do excursions include hotel pickup? Yes — every trip includes pickup and drop-off at your Marrakech hotel, riad or villa, with a professional driver.
Are prices per person or per vehicle? Per vehicle. One fixed price covers the whole car and everyone in it — no per-head maths, no surprises.
Which trip should we pick with limited time? With one free day, Ourika (closest) or Essaouira (biggest contrast). With an evening only, the Agafay desert dinner. With two spare days, talk to us about Merzouga or Zagora for the real dunes.
