The Best Day Trips from Marrakech, Compared

24 June 2026 · Xhosen Gate

A clear, honest comparison of the six best day trips from Marrakech — Ourika, Agafay, Ouzoud, Essaouira, Ait Ben Haddou and Casablanca — by drive time, what you actually see, and who each one suits best.

Which day trip from Marrakech should I choose?

It comes down to two things: how far you're willing to drive, and what kind of day you want. Marrakech sits within reach of Atlas mountain valleys, Morocco's highest waterfalls, a stone desert, the Atlantic coast and the great kasbahs of the south — but those experiences are spread out, so the right pick depends on your group and your energy that morning.

As a rule of thumb: stay close (the Ourika Valley, the Agafay desert) for a relaxed, low-effort day, and go further (Ouzoud, Essaouira, Ait Ben Haddou, Casablanca) when you want a bucket-list highlight and don't mind more time on the road. Below we compare the six most popular options side by side.

What are the easiest, most relaxed day trips?

If you have young kids, older travellers, or you simply want to be back by mid-afternoon, keep it short. The Ourika Valley is about an hour south — a green river valley in the Atlas foothills with Berber villages, riverside tagine restaurants with tables practically in the water, and the walk up to the Setti Fatma waterfalls. The Agafay desert is even closer, around 45 minutes southwest: rolling, moon-like stone hills with camel rides, quad circuits and sunset dinner camps facing the snow-capped Atlas.

  • Ourika Valley — ~1h each way, waterfall walks, riverside lunches; great for families and couples wanting nature without a long haul.
  • Agafay desert — ~45 min each way, the closest real desert scenery to Marrakech; works even as a half-day or a sunset-dinner evening.

Are the Ouzoud Waterfalls worth the 2h30 drive?

For nature lovers, absolutely. Ouzoud is Morocco's most spectacular waterfall — a 110-metre cascade tumbling in tiers into a green gorge, with rainbows in the spray most mornings and wild Barbary macaques in the olive trees along the paths. Small boats ferry you close to the base of the falls, and the walk down (and back up) is lined with viewpoint cafés.

Be honest with yourself about the day: it's around five hours of driving round trip, plus two to three hours at the falls, and the descent involves plenty of steps. Start early, wear proper shoes, and it's one of the most rewarding full days you can do from Marrakech.

Essaouira or Casablanca — which coastal day trip?

Both sit around 2h45 from Marrakech, but they could hardly be more different. Essaouira is the charmer: a breezy, blue-and-white fortified medina on the Atlantic, with sea ramparts, a working fishing port, grilled sardines at the harbour and argan-oil cooperatives to visit on the way. It's a wander-at-your-own-pace day with a famously laid-back mood.

Casablanca is Morocco's business metropolis, and the honest truth is that most of it isn't postcard material — but it holds one genuinely world-class sight: the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques on earth and one of the very few non-Muslims can enter on a guided tour, perched dramatically over the ocean. Pick Essaouira for charm and atmosphere; pick Casablanca if the mosque is on your bucket list.

Is Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate worth the long day?

This is the most cinematic trip on the list — literally. The road crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres, with hairpin views over the High Atlas, before dropping to Ait Ben Haddou: the UNESCO-listed fortified ksar you've seen in Gladiator and Game of Thrones, a stack of earthen kasbahs above a palm-lined river. Nearby Ouarzazate adds the Atlas Film Studios and the Taourirt Kasbah.

The honest caveat: it's around 3h30 each way, so roughly seven hours of driving in one day. It's absolutely doable with an early start and a good driver, but it suits travellers happy with a full, ambitious itinerary. If you want to continue to the Skoura palm grove or the Dades Valley, turn it into an overnight instead.

Can I see the real Sahara in a day from Marrakech?

No — and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling the drive. The great ergs of golden dunes are at Merzouga (around 9 hours away) and Zagora (around 7), which makes them overnight trips by definition: Zagora works as a 2-day trip, Merzouga deserves 3 days with a night in a desert camp.

The honest one-day desert fix is the Agafay — 45 minutes away, with camel treks, quad biking and sunset camps that photograph beautifully against the Atlas. If the giant dunes are non-negotiable for you, ask us what's realistic for your dates; we'd rather set the right expectation than sell you a day spent almost entirely in the car.

How do I get to these day trips without renting a car?

There's no Uber or Bolt in Marrakech, and local taxis are negotiated on the spot — fine for a hop across town, but stressful and rarely fixed-price for a full-day excursion across the Atlas. The simplest, calmest option is a private driver for the day: a fixed per-vehicle price, an English- or French-speaking driver who knows the mountain roads, and a car that waits for you at every stop.

That's exactly how Xhosen Gate excursions run — door-to-door from your riad or hotel, at your pace, with free child seats and no middleman fee. Fixed per-vehicle prices: Ourika €30, Essaouira €95, Ouarzazate & Ait Ben Haddou €120, Casablanca €140. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and group size and we'll talk you through the options honestly before you book; payment is cash (EUR or MAD) or bank transfer.

Perfect from start to finish. Our driver was waiting at Marrakech airport with a name sign, helped with all our bags and got us to our riad gate in no time — he even arranged a porter through the medina. Will book again!
