When to go to the Ourika Valley for a full river, spring blossoms and the fewest crowds — plus the Monday souk, and what to bring for a perfect day in the High Atlas.
Timing makes the difference
The Ourika Valley, a green river gorge in the High Atlas about an hour south of Marrakech, is famous for its rushing river, the Setti Fatma waterfalls and its riverside terraces. It's beautiful in every season — but the river's level, the colours on the slopes and the size of the crowds all change through the year, so timing your visit makes a real difference.
Best season: spring
Spring (March–May) is the sweet spot. Snowmelt from the peaks and winter rain keep the Ourika river full and loud, the waterfalls at Setti Fatma are at their strongest, and the valley is at its greenest. Best of all, the almond and cherry trees around the Berber villages blossom in late winter and early spring — pink and white clouds against red pisé walls and, above them, mountains still capped with snow.
Autumn (October–November) is the runner-up: warm days, softer light and thinner crowds, with the river refreshed by the first rains. By late summer, after months of dry season, the river and the falls can run noticeably lower.
Summer: the classic heat escape
Don't write off summer. When Marrakech bakes at 40°C, the valley runs several degrees cooler, and this is when Ourika plays its oldest role: the city's escape hatch. Marrakchi families have been coming up here to eat tajines with their feet in the river for generations, and joining them is half the fun.
The honest trade-off: the river is at its lowest, and summer weekends get genuinely busy with local day-trippers. Come on a weekday, arrive early, and you'll have the best of it.
Winter: snow above, quiet below
From December to February the valley is at its quietest and most dramatic — crisp air, snow on the peaks directly above you, and terraces to yourself. The waterfall walk is cooler and fresher, though the rocks can be wet, so good shoes matter even more. Bring a warm layer: it can be 10°C cooler than Marrakech, and the riverside shade is chilly even on sunny days.
Best time of day
Whatever the season, arrive in the morning. You'll walk to the waterfalls before the midday heat and before the day-trip crowds arrive — especially on weekends, when the valley fills up from late morning. Leaving Marrakech around 8:30–9:00 puts you at Setti Fatma with the trail almost to yourself, and back at a riverside table just as lunch service begins.
Make it a Monday: the Tnine Ourika souk
If you can choose your day, choose Monday. Tnine Ourika, at the entrance to the valley, holds its big weekly souk — one of the most authentic markets near Marrakech, where mountain families come down to trade produce, livestock, spices and tools. It's a working market, not a show, and an hour there on the way up the valley adds a whole extra dimension to the day. Go in the morning; it thins out by early afternoon.
What to bring
Pack light, but pack right:
- Swimwear and a towel in spring and summer — the pools are cold but irresistible
- Water shoes or grippy trainers — the rocks on the waterfall path can be slippery
- Sun protection and plenty of water, whatever the month
- A warm layer from November to March
- Cash in dirhams for cafés, parking, local guides and the souk
Frequently asked questions
When is the Ourika river fullest? In spring, roughly March to May, after winter rain and snowmelt from the High Atlas. Levels drop gradually through summer and recover with the autumn rains.
How far is the Ourika Valley from Marrakech? About 60 km — roughly a one-hour drive. A private trip with Xhosen Gate starts at €30 per vehicle, fixed price, with riad pickup, a driver who waits while you explore, and the return included. Booking takes two minutes on WhatsApp.
Is the valley worth it when the river is low? Yes — the villages, the mountain views, the souk and the riverside lunches don't depend on the water level. But if the waterfalls are your priority, aim for spring.
